Title ACCORD – A Consortium for COnvection-scale modelling Research and Development
Project summary ACCORD is a collaboration project of 26 national meteorological services (NMS) that work on the development and improvement of numerical short-range (up to three days in advance) high spatial resolution limited area weather forecasts. ACCORD consortium members use LAM code developed within ACCORD that utilizes parts of IFS from ECMWF and ARPEGE from Meteo France. The global medium-range and long-range numerical weather predictions are produced by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and Meteo-France with which operational collaboration has been established to obtain lateral boundary conditions.
On the other hand, the high spatial resolution short-range numerical weather predictions are the responsibility of NMSs. Since the 1980s, these NMSs have collaborated within the frame of several regional consortia. With the establishment of the ACCORD consortium (November 27, 2020), three regional consortia (ALADIN, LACE, HIRLAM) joined together to form a unique collaboration of 26 countries that work together to develop short-range numerical weather forecast.
Main project goals Cooperation and joint work on further development of short- range limited area numerical forecast. Development of new algorithms to face the challenges of parallel computer architectures and massive data flows. Improvement and strengthening of work on research and development of the common code of the numerical model of the atmosphere, expansion of cooperation on new components of this complex system and its more efficient maintenance.
Key words numerical model, weather prediction
