2005 EUMETSAT Meteorological Satellite Conference
Dubrovnik, Croatia, 19th – 23rd September, 2005
2nd Announcement
![]()
The 2005 EUMETSAT Meteorological Satellite Conference is co-organised by the Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service (DHMZ). It will take place from 19 to 23 September in Dubrovnik, Croatia.
In the words of George Bernard Shaw, "those who wish to see Heaven on Earth should come to Dubrovnik". It is certainly no coincidence that this pearl of the Adriatic, with its rich vegetation, white pebble beaches and the crystal clean sea, was selected as this year’s conference venue. Both the Hotel Dubrovnik Palace – this year’s venue - and its magnificent surroundings, cannot fail to inspire and so contribute to a successful and thought-provoking conference.
The Hotel Dubrovnik Palace is a newly refurbished, modern and functional hotel with state-of-the art technical equipment, spacious meeting rooms and a full range of leisure facilities for the all-important work/relaxation balance. For more details on the venue please consult www.dubrovnikpalace.hr. Alternative accommodation is also listed in this Announcement.
Whilst the opening session on Current and Future Satellite Programmes and Systems will be a familiar topic to regular attendees, the new presentation format is set not only to inform but also to provide a stimulus for an increasingly interactive conference. The programme addresses varied issues - from the latest developments in meteorological applications, in particular Meteosat Second Generation, to applications in land surface and climate, through to a training presentation linking four continents and finally to our culminating session on clouds, aerosols and atmospheric composition from satellites. EUMETSAT and the Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service look forward to sharing an enriching 2005 conference programme with you.
This second announcement and draft programmes are being sent to those who registered via the first announcement. These documents will also be made available on the EUMETSAT website along with the abstracts, at a later date, of the selected presentations.
Please fill out both registration and hotel accommodation and fax them to the conference handling agent, Adriatic Luxury Services (+385 20 437 289)

VCS Aktiengesellschaft (cocktails and music)- Conference Dinner on Wednesday, 21 September at the Dubrovnik Museum of Modern Art (Umjetnička Galerija Dubrovnik) which houses a significant collection of works by Croatian and European artists from the 19th and 20th centuries. Delegates can look forward to a memorable demonstration of the Moreska sword dance, one of the oldest traditional European dances still performed. Although it is not entirely sure whether the dance came to the Adriatic directly from Spain or from Sicily or mainland Italy when Dalmatia formed part of the Venetian Republic and whether it was originally a Moorish dance or a Spanish one, Moreska has been synonymous with the Dalmation island of Korcula since the 16th century. And of course, the way to understanding the culture of a particular country is through its cuisine. If you are not able to visit all four regions of Croatia, we can offer you the next best thing – a culinary voyage of Croatian specialities!
Contribution of € 30 per participant
Sponsored by:
Kongsberg Spacetec (venue and entertainment)- End of Conference Excursion on Friday, 23 September. Even with only a short time in Dubrovnik, at least half a day exploring one of the islands dotted along the coast is recommended. The nearest is Lokrum, a haven of tranquility, pine forests and rocky beaches. The island is uninhabited but with, apart from the lush vegetation, plenty to see, including a ruined fort and Benedictine abbey. So as to enjoy the best of the warm late afternoon sun, departure from the Conference hotels for the port of Dubrovnik is scheduled for around16h00, returning in time for a traditional Croatian meal at the famous restaurant "Konavoski dvori". Located in Konavle, an area of natural beauty on the River Ljuta and Croatia’s southernmost region, the restaurant was built from several old mills, still in operation today.

Getting to DubrovnikBy car
Croatia’s shoreline guarantees spectacular scenery and breathtaking views. Croatia is integrated into the European road marking system. European roads are indicated by the letter "E" and highway roads "M". The most picturesque route in Croatia is considered to be the Adriatic highway (Jadranska magistrala) which connects Rijeka (just south of the border with Slovenia) and Dubrovnik. Parking facilities at the Hotel Dubrovnik Palace are available. Please note that parking spaces are very limited around the old town. The centre is traffic-free.
By air
Dubrovnik airport is called Čilipi and is located about 22 km from the old town (to the east). Distance to the Hotel Dubrovnik Palace is about 30 km. In the summer flight schedule, which runs till 29 October, Croatia Airlines has added new direct flights between Adriatic destinations (Dubrovnik, Split and Zagreb) and Europe. However, getting to Dubrovnik may still present a challenge, particularly if you do not book early enough.
A taxi from the Airport to the Hotel Dubrovnik Palace or any of the other Hotels nearby will take around 40 mins and cost around 300-350 Kn. Adriatic Luxury Travel can arrange for a taxi service costing 270 Kn. If you wish to take advantage of this offer please contact ALS directly.
By rail
The rail network connects all major Croatian cities, except Dubrovnik. If you plan to travel by rail the best way is to arrive to Zagreb or Ploče and take the bus from there to Dubrovnik. Information can be obtained through the Croatian Railroads official pages: www.hznet.hr
By bus
Buses run every 15 minutes between the Lapad peninsula (the Hotels selected for the Conference are all situated along this stretch of coastline) and the old town. Bus tickets can be obtained from kiosks, Libertas counters at Pile Gate (eastern entrance to the old town), the bus terminal, as well as from hotel receptions and travel agencies. Cost at the time of writing: Kn 10.
